The family's operation was further expanded in 1995 when they purchased 320 acres of sugar maple forest in Lutsen, in the Superior National Forest. By 1995, Kirstin, her husband Greg Nichols, and son Calvin Waddell, joined the operation. They expanded the operation to several hundred taps, built a larger sugar house, and invested in a wood-fired evaporator. In 1986, Chris began a more extensive operation on his property in Almelund, Chisago County, with the help of his parents, Jim and Marianne. The family's journey in the maple syrup industry began in the 1970s when Kirstin van den Berg and her brother, Chris Cordes, started collecting sap in Chisago County as children. This annual award by the Cook County U of M Extension recognizes the contributions of a farm family to the local agricultural and food landscape of Cook County.
